Medicare – More Information

See for yourself, if you are age 65 or getting close to your 65th birthday

The U-Haul Dealer Benefits Program lets you easily find, compare and get private coverage to fill in the gaps that traditional Medicare does not cover.  If you are 65, or getting close to your 65th birthday, we can help you find affordable Medicare plans in your area.  If you are already in Medicare, the annual Medicare open enrollment period begins on October 15 and runs through December 7 and lets you change plans effective as of January 1.

As a U-Haul Dealer, you and the employees of your businesses get access to our national private health insurance exchange powered by our technology partner eHealth.  Business groups and working families can  compare and buy medical and dental insurance online.  Individuals 65+ and eligible for Medicare can compare and buy private Medicare plans to fill out their original Medicare coverage.

We make it as easy as possible for you to compare and enroll.  We have operated our national private health exchange for over a decade and we continue to get great feedback from dealers and employees.  We review Medicare plans of leading insurance carriers.  All plans you will see represent high value and are filed and approved in your state.  You can talk with a licensed eHealth representative in your area to help with your questions before making a decision.

What you can do during the Medicare open enrollment:

If you are new to Medicare, you can get a Medicare supplement insurance plan or a Medicare Advantage plan

If you are already enrolled in Medicare coverage, you can:

  • Switch from original Medicare to a Medicare Advantage plan
  • Change from one Medicare Advantage plan to different Medicare Advantage plan
  • Change from a Medicare Advantage plan that includes Rx coverage if you don’t have Rx in your current plan

Choosing the right Medicare plan

Every Dealer’s personal and family situation is different.  You want to be sure you get the best possible value for the Medicare plan you buy.  Finding the right Medicare plan can be a confusing and difficult task. Let us help.

Choosing the right Medicare plan should start even before you get your eligibility notice, in the months before you turn age 65. Start by asking yourself a few questions that will have a bearing on the type of private Medicare coverage you may want, over and above original Medicare provided by the federal government:

• Do you understand that original Medicare (Part A for hospitalizations and Part B for physician treatments) has significant limits to what it covers?
• Do you enjoy an active lifestyle that includes extensive travel outside your home base, perhaps a second home in another state?
• Do you have physical limitations, including chronic conditions and illnesses, and concerns about your family history of disease?
• Are your prescription medicines costly and do you use generics or insist on brand-names?
• Do you visit a primary care physician and specialists often during the year?
• Are you open to changing doctors, or is this a must keep concern?

Your answers to these questions give you a good start on a self-assessment of your needs and personal requirements when you go on Medicare. Now you can use this knowledge to sort out the type of private Medicare coverage that may fit you best, beyond simply comparing monthly premiums.

Here is a quick reference guide to help simplify your decision.

People who typically enroll in a Medicare Supplement insurance (“Medigap”) plan:

• Have higher than average medical usage
• Want maximum flexibility in the providers they chose to get care
• Travel extensively outside the plan service area
• Understand (Part D) prescription drug coverage is separate
• Understand that extra benefits such as dental and vision are separate

People who typically enroll in a Medicare Advantage plan:

• Have low or about average medical usage and don’t mind having annual deductible and coinsurance to pay
• Travel minimally outside of the plan service area
• Want their prescription drug coverage to be included
• Want or need to build in extra benefits such as Hospital Recovery to help cover high co-pays, deductibles and out-of-pocket claim requirements – see Supplemental Insurance Benefits – Dealer Benefits Network), Dental and Vision

This is a simplified guideline to selecting private Medicare coverage and many situations do not fall into a bullet point. However, this gives a good start to understanding the differences in plans and what may work best for you and preparing yourself to make a good decision.

Affordable Choices

Independent studies of the premium cost of private Medicare plans continue to show a wide variation in the monthly premiums of available plans, even though the plan designs are uniform under federal rules.  Cost of similar plans also vary by state.  That is why the U-Haul Dealer Benefits Program goes through a careful selection process each year.

We select only insurance companies authorized to do business in your state that have high quality ratings.  Then we look at the Medicare plans filed and approved by your state insurance regulator for the plans we think represent the best value in terms of monthly premium rates and benefit schedules, whether Medicare Advantage or Medicare Supplement insurance or Prescription Drug plans.

Compare and Buy

If you are Medicare eligible, we let you compare monthly premiums, carrier ratings, plan provisions and the doctors and hospitals available in the provider networks.
